Frequently Asked Questions

All Rock Retaining Walls

What is a Bush Rock Retaining Wall?

A Bush rock retaining wall utilises strategically positioned rocks which form a barrier that retains the soil behind it. Rock retaining walls rely on the weight of the rocks to resist lateral earth pressure, preventing soil from moving in a particular direction.

Why choose Bush rock for your retaining wall?

Bush rock is a natural product that is durable, attractive, long-lasting, environmentally-friendly, low-maintenance and cost-effective to install. Bush rock walls drain extremely well, which minimises the pressure that can build up from water saturated soils - a problem with other retaining walls such as sleepers.

How is a Bush rock wall constructed

Specially selected Bush rock are positioned around the perimeter of the retaining wall, using an excavator equipped with a "rock grab" claw-type attachment. The flattest surface or "face" of each rock is set to the front of the wall, and aligned to the required line or curve of the wall. After the first row of rocks are positioned, a second layer is added that's leaning slightly towards the bank. Further layers are added to the required height.

Geofabric is placed at the back of the rock wall to prevent fine soil particles, stones etc from working their way through the gaps between each rock. Agg pipe is layed at the base of the Geofabric, then covered with drainage material such as large gravel or course stone to the height of the wall. Non-clay soil the fills then gap between the gravel and the bank.

How long will a Bush rock wall last?

A professionally designed and constructed Bush rock retaining wall looks great, is cost effective, and will last a lifetime. Bush rock walls are a work of art, with a range of long-lasting structural, maintenace and aesthetic benefits.

Will a Bush Rock Wall need maintenance?

The rocks themselves require no maintenance. Being a natural product, moss may form on the rocks when installed in shady areas that receive little or no direct sunlight, giving the wall character, charm and earthy tones.

What type of rock do you use?

Bush rock is a type of basalt that is formed from volcanic lava flows, and is characterised by it's dense dark grains. Basalt or "Bush rock" is noted for it's durability and is perfectly suited for retaining wall construction, steps, water features, ponds and dry creek landscaping in commercial and dowmestic garden applications.

Here does your Bush rock come from?

The best quality Bush rock comes from the original Gold Coast Seaway development quarry in the Numinbar Valley, Gold Coast. The quarry supplied Bush rock for the Seaway development in 1983, where over one million tonnes of rock was used to stabilise the Nerang River Entrance. Our rock was excavated in 1983, though not quite large enough in size for the Seaway construction. We sift through huge piles of excavated material, picking out rocks best suited for our retaining wall, and landscaping projects.

How much will a Bush rock wall cost?

The cost of a rock wall varies, depending on a number of factors including:

  • Height and length of the wall
  • Soil Conditions
  • Slope of the ground
  • Excavation and drainage requirements
  • Vehicle access to the site
  • Whether structural diagrams are required
  • Whether the wall can be constructed by a machine or by hand

Do I need to apply for council approval to build a rock wall?

Generally, if a rock retaining wall is less than 1.0m in height, council approval or an engineering design is not required. However, we recommend checking with your local council, as requirements vary from region to region and certain conditions do apply.

Do you do anything else apart from build rock walls?

Yes, our Bush rock service also includes the construction of rock steps, rock garden edging, ponds, waterfalls and general rock landscaping. We can also remove old retaining walls, dispose of all waste, and excavate the site in preparation for the new Bush rock wall.

What access is needed to build rock walls?

Bush rock and drainage gravel is transported from the quarry on a large Tipper Truck. Costs will be minimised if the material can be dropped off by the Tipper Truck next to the wall. If materials need to be moved by Bobcat, or in extreme situations by hand, additional charges will be included.
